Setting

The Riviera between myth and nature
A corner of greenery, an enchanted garden that the Tyrrhenian flows for over 100 km, full of testimonies, history and landscape. The climate is mild even in the coldest months and this helps to attract many visitors. The ancient origins of the coastal cities accentuate the charm of the district: Terracina, the "gate of the sun" founded by the Etruscans and enriched by the Romans with impressive civil works (ancient Via Appia and the temple of Jupiter). Sperlonga, a medieval town built on a rocky promontory and prey to numerous raids by corsairs over the centuries, but already a favorite place of the emperor Tiberius who had an imposing villa built there. Formia, the good port, as the ancient etymology recalls, and legendary town of the Lestrigoni, the ferocious cannibals, who definitively decided the return to Ithaca of Ulysses. Gaeta, Bourbon city protected by castles and towers that surround medieval churches. Minturno, one of the crucial junctions on the ancient Via Appia, a city that the Romans enriched with an imposing theater that is still well preserved today. Ponza, Aurora island in which ancient tradition places, in competition with the Circeo, the home of the Maga Circe. The hinterland also preserves art and naturalistic treasures. Among these: Circeo Park, which also includes the island of Zannone, the dunes and lakes of Sabaudia. Ninfa known as the Pompeii of the Middle Ages, with its magical oasis: a splendid Italian garden. Fondi with the mighty Caetani castle and the wide plain full of orange trees that thrilled Goethe. Art and culture, ancient history, folklore, cuisine, all combine to make the Riviera a treasure chest, where time has been able to preserve rare and precious pearls.

Activities and attractions

The trek to the peak of circe (541m)
the route: the starting point of the excursion can be set at Torre Paola. A dirt road starts from the base of the mountain and must be traveled for about 100m. The start of the path (1) is given by a sort of red earth step. The route immerses itself in the young bush which has little undergrowth and is therefore easily passable. The path immediately becomes steep and requires a slow and firm pace. The tree cover is made up of holm oaks, strawberry trees and downy oaks. In a short time the eye catches the yellow signals of the CAI (Italian Alpine Club). The first stage can be done at about 200m above sea level, where a balcony opens onto the plain below (the fields, the lake and the dunes) above the bush. The recovery is done by following the ridge of the mountain with a tortuous and moderately demanding route that leads to the second belay point. Here the panorama conquers two other spaces; the one towards the sea and the one towards the peak. If the atmosphere is clear (with northerly winds) you can push your gaze to the north-west as far as the Alban hills and in particular circumstances as far as the distant dome of San Pietro. Towards the south, however, the sea offers itself for its intense colors. This is one of the most suggestive points of the entire route. For a stretch of about twenty meters it runs exactly on the ridge, and this requires that you behave with a minimum of caution. About an hour and three quarters from the start you reach the platform of the peak at 541m. From here you can see the islands of palmarola, ponza and zannone. The last route to follow (2) requires the use of the hands because it is characterized by a steep slope, it can be completed in an hour at the most. Remember to follow the red CAI signs for the descent.
