House with 1 bedroom 9 km from the beach

Having had disappointing camping holiday experiences several times, the stay at Elena's house felt as a revelation and certainly ranks as one of our has best holidays ever. We enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and tranquility of the place just as much as the nicely decorated house itself. On several occasions balmy summer evenings were adorned by the enchanting mating calls of midwife toads. We got acquainted with the neighbor from the premises below, Nano, who, as we found out ourselves, happened to be an accomplished chef. We highly recommend his culinary skills.

The slightly hair-raising ascent to the cottage is worth the effort; it is wonderfully secluded. The garden is 'behind' in keeping but nonetheless full of wonderful fruit trees, which yielded several tasty deserts, cooked on the two rather slow electric rings of the cooker. The bed is somewhat basic, but adequate and the solar heating and water works extremely well. A car is essential however. The melodic, but rather persistent chiming of cow bells in the field immediately adjacent could annoy some, and the neighbours speak little English and can block access. Use the car park lower down. However, these are minor gripes for an otherwise excellent villa, with wonderful views.

It lies in the lower hills halfway between the Picos walks and fantastic beaches (30-45 minutes drive). It is a wonderfully restored old building with lovely wooden floors, lots of light and very comfortable. There is plenty of space inside and even more outside in the gardens. It is extremely quiet and peaceful, unless you find cowbells and scops and tawny owls disturbing. We will be going again.
