Above the rocks looking out to the sea of Calheta, 30 minutes from the city of Funchal, is Casa do Calhau Grande, an ideal location for those who appreciate the calmness, the agricultural surroundings and nature.

Its name, Casa do Calhau Grande (House of the Great Pebble), originates from the great rocks of basaltic origin, calhaus, which you find there, some 5 meters high, a place that locals are still finding older rocks.

You can see old houses in madeirense traditional style, acquired by the current proprietor, in 1995 and reconstructed, by the owner, in 1997 and 2004. The construction was renewed in accordance with the models of the region, with local rock, carefully constructed, in order to protect the surrounding ecology, tracing its original, the harmony and the integration in the landscape.

Casa do Calhau Grande, with a panoramic view of 180º on the Atlantic, fits in the natural, country environment, in perfect harmony with the typical rustic look of the region, and provides a calm, healthy stay of great pleasure.

The Enterprise consists of 4 independent houses, with privacy, in a rustic and comfortable environment, framed for the spectacular beauty that the seaview and the energy of the rocks provide to them. One of the houses is the ideal place for a family to escape to at the weekend, to live with tranquillity and to get a taste of the proximity with nature. With private parking, a good choice of gardens, pool, agricultural land with fruit trees, vegetable gardens and aromatic herbs that are of high biological quality.
Casa do Calhau Grande is composed by four independent houses: Palheiro, Tenda, Sapateiro and Calhau. They are implanted at a high level of the small farm, offering an excellent view and the sensation of being able to hug the sea.


Palheiro possesses one ample room with double bed, living room, TV Satellite, Radio, CD/MP3 playback, private bathroom, kitchenette equipped, private entrance, private garden and barbecue area. Palheiro welcome 2 people and one third as a supplement.

Tenda has one bedroom with one double bed, kitchenette, living room, satellite TV, Radio, CD/MP3 playback, private bathroom, private entrance and barbecue.

Casa do Sapateiro has one big living room, satellite TV, Radio, CD/MP3 playback, shared WC, equipped kitchen, private entrance, private garden, 2 bedrooms, each one with one double bed and private bathroom. One of the bedrooms has its own balcony.

Casa do Calhau is the perfect place for a small family (a couple with two children). This house has two floors. On the ground floor there is one big ample sitting room made by wood and stone, equipped with satellite TV, radio and CD player. On the first floor there are two bedrooms. One has two single beds and other has one couple bed and a balcony. Outside, there is a private barbecue, garden, and private entrance.

The swimming pool is 9x5 meters approximately. It was constructed specifically to integrate into the surrounding countryside and the geographic location, offers excellent privacy. The temperature of the water is the same as the surrounding natural temperature. In the Summer, it varies between 22 and 28 degrees and in the Winter between 14 and 22 degrees.

The private space belonging to the garden is ample enough to allow one to make the best of broken contact with nature, especially allowing you to enjoy the pure air, the agricultural sounds and sun.

Plants and the existing flowers are those that the climate favours and those that are better adapted to the place, such as: banana trees, palms, yam, cardinal, cacti, jasmine, daisies, etc. A permanent running well exists with fish and frogs.
In the garden exist some water springs that can be found throughout the year, even so with bigger abundance in the Winter. Part of this water is accumulated and used in the irrigation of the plants of the garden, the trees and vegetable garden.

In it are a variety of fruit trees, enough for the family. This is a privileged space. Produce includes mangos, papaya, damson plum, fruit of paradise, peach, grape, plum, pitanga, passion fruit, fig, guava, soursop, lemon, nêspera, banana, diospiro, avocado, orange and tangerines.

Between the trees some vegetables are cultivated, also, in small amounts, such as borecole, turnip, onion, tomato, lettuce, carrot, pumpkin, spinach, French garlic, pepper, etc.

As well as aromatic herbs such as parsley, fennel, tarragon, mint, the cider-grass, English peach tree, oregano, etc., sprinkled here and there, decorate and perfume the area.
