Casa Ilda is a beautiful villa built at the end of the 18th Century. The Villa nestles in the Apuan Alps in the Garfagnana region North of Lucca, where it enjoys peace and tranquility and commands spectacular views of mountains and the village below.
The Villa is located just 12 miles from Lucca, thus combining proximity to the town of Lucca with the peace and beauty of the surrounding countryside. It is the perfect base for people looking for a relaxing holiday in a quiet position.
During last years the villa has been restored to the high standard, leaving most of its original features. Main accommodation is on two floors consisting of dining room with fireplace, kitchen, three full bathrooms and three bedrooms (one King and two Queen size beds) accomodating private six people (up to eight people). Bedrooms have splendid views over the garden and the mountains.
The villa is accompanied by lovely garden with fruit trees and comfortable furniture. On the ground floor from the patio is an archway leading to the second kitchen suitable for preparing alfresco meals.
On the side of the villa there is a brick oven for preparing pizza. The villa is placed in a walking distance to restaurants, bar, bakery, grocery store, pharmacy and post office.
Piegaio is an area of wooded hills and winding roads surrounding the valleys of the Serchio and Lima rivers, where many Italians choose to have their holiday properties.
You should however note this isn't Chiantishire, the fashionable, expensive and crowded part of Tuscany, south of Florence, but the quieter, more relaxed and, to our minds, far more interesting area to the north. Pisa and Florence are within easy reach, and skiing at Abetone and sandy beaches are within an hour's drive of the area. The region has excellent walking, friendly locals and many cultural activities. If you have read Eric Newby's "A Small Place In Italy" which is set towards the northern end of this region, you will already have a good idea of the area.
The villages remain mainly unspoilt with small scale farming the principal source of employment. Industry, primarily paper-making, is confined to the bottom of the valleys as only there is it possible to build roads suitable for heavy vehicles.
The northern, more mountainous, part of the region is known as the Garfagnana. This region begins around thirty kilometres north of Lucca. Through this area runs the river Serchio which divides two mountain ranges, the Apennines, the range that runs almost the entire length of Italy, and the Apuan Alps, the smaller coastal range well known for its marble. From this area the Serchio runs south eventually entering the Mediterranean Sea south of Viareggio.
Major towns in the Garfagnana include Barga (pop 11,000), noted for its prominent hilltop position and cathedral and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (pop 6,000), the principal town of the region.
Some 15 kilometres to the north of Lucca the Serchio is joined by the river Lima, just to the west of the spa town of Bagni di Lucca.
Villa is located - 20 min. from Lucca, 40 min. from Pisa, 30 min. from Puccini Lake (Summer Opera), 90 min. from Florence, 2 h from Siena (city of the Palio), 30 min. from the beautiful valley of Garfagnana and 30 min. from Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio in the coast of Versilia.

In June 2015 five of us spent three nights at Casa Ilda. We were pleased with everything--from the cozy bedrooms- one of which has an alcove with a bed and couch, to the three newly remodeled bathrooms, the two kitchens and the large dining room-lounge area. The yard was lovely, and we only wish we had had more time to enjoy the spacious area for lounging or cooking outside, surrounded by beautiful gardens.Though we already knew the area well, it was fun to get up in the morning, walk to the local coffee shop and have our cappuccini outside as we watched the day begin in a typical Italian village. Our contact in Piegaio couldn't have been warmer or more accommodating. What a lovely surprise it was on our arrival to find a bottle of wine, coffee packets, and bouquets of fresh flowers throughout the house. We felt welcome!
Lovely villa near Lucca
I stayed twice in this villa. It is lovely situated near Lucca, has a big garden. The owner built this year an original pizza oven. It is a typical family house where one feels easily at home. Had good beds. The kitchen is well equiped for a vacation home.
