The apartment is located on the beach on the northern part of Mojacar Playa, a peaceful spot well out of earshot of the nightclubs. Walk out of the apartment, go past the garden and you feel the sand under your feet and on the water sports and fishing beach - walk a couple of minutes to the left there is a beautifully kept swimming beach as well.
The flat was completely renovated in 2012/2013, with new kitchen, shower room, new beds and bed linen. Located on the first floor, it has great views over the beautiful garden and guitar-shaped pool with the sea in the background. There is a dedicated parking space (car recommended), but a supermarket, some restaurant, bars and internet cafe are all within easy walking distance.
The flat has all modern conveniences, including satellite tv (bring your sky card if you wish), stereo, microwave, etc. It is located within a small communidad of 27 apartments, about half of which are lived in year round by people from around Europe. It has very cosy and friendly feeling, and is ideal for families and couples.
Closest airports: Almeria, Murcia, Alicante
In the far Southeastern corner of the Iberian peninsula lies the sun-baked province of Almeria, with the highest hours of sunshine and lowest rainfall in Europe.
The coastline varies enormously : East of Almeria the coastline is the most attractive as it approaches Cabo de Gata National Park. The park has a long, rugged coastline with secluded bays and remote beaches, some linked only by a footpath. Much of the park is comprised of volcanic rocky mountains that plunge directly to the shore, creating one of Andalucia´s most dramatic coastlines. San Miguel del Cabo de Gata is a village close to a saltwater lagoon with exceptional birdlife, the Salinas del Cabo de Gata. The next coastal village is the largest one in the park, San José, with the small resorts of Las Negras, La Isleta del Moro and Agua Amarga to the north.
The most popular resorts are Roquetas de Mar and Mojácar, the latter with the highest concentration of foreign residents - and bars, restaurants and nightlife - in the province. However, it still remains a relatively small, quiet and undeveloped resort compared to the rest of the Spanish coastline.
Much of the interior of Almeria province is semi-arid steppe. It is a parched, lunar landscape of low, mostly barren mountains and dried-up river beds, like a scene from the North American Wild West and it´s no surprise that this is where many spaghetti westerns were shot. You can visit Mini Hollywood, near Tabernas, a former film set where A Fistful of Dollars and many other westerns were made, or the two other Wild West theme parks in the area: Texas-Hollywood and Western Leone.
Activities and attractions
The long uncrowded sandy beaches are one of its main attractions and among the best in Almeria. The beaches are 14km long, with a large part being designated an area of natural beauty. Only 7km has been developed and they consistently earn European Blue Flag awards for cleanliness.
The beach resort has been developed over the past two decades, it is now a lively resort with much to offer with beach bars, local and international restaurants, discos, hotels and shops. The resort enforces a building restriction to prevent it becoming a high rise concrete development; residential buildings are restricted to two storeys and hotels can't be built higher than four floors. Giving you a feeling of space that cannot be found anywhere else along the eastern Spanish coastline.
Mojacar's old town, its coastline and rugged, mountainous interior provide a huge range of different leisure activities for foreign visitors. The resort has a wide choice of local and international restaurants, numerous sporting activities are available and there are plenty of interesting excursions along the coast and inland.
Start by getting to know the old town with its Moorish fortress, El Torreon, and its labyrinth of charming cobbled back streets. Wander through the maze of boutiques, bars and street cafes and savour the rich history and warm Spanish hospitality of this ancient town. On Wednesday mornings you'll be able to enjoy the colourful chaos of the weekly street market where Spanish housewives flock to stock up with their week's supply of fresh fruit and veg. For a more international scene, head down to the seafront with its promenade lined with beach shops, British bars and pizzerias.
There are two nearby horse riding centres. Golfers have a wealth of choice with numerous 18-hole courses within easy reach.
Almeria's stunning Desert Springs course, designed by Walker Cup Captain Peter McEvoy, was the first desert course to be built in Europe. With lush fairways, water features and harsh desert terrain, the course rivals the famous desert courses of Arizona and California.
The new Valle de Este course, a short distance to the north of Mojacar, uses the natural desert landscape to its best effect providing a challenging game in a beautiful setting. It has large greens and various water features.
It was Almeria's harsh, arid hinterland that brought Italian and Hollywood moviemakers here to film hundreds of spaghetti westerns and some blockbusters such as Fistful of Dollars, the Good the Bad and the Ugly and Lawrence of Arabia. Journey about 60 kilometres south west of the resort and you'll be able to visit the remnants of the studio sets at Mini Hollywood and Texas Hollywood near the town of Tabernas.
This is a fun, family day out in the "badlands" of Almeria where you can enjoy wild west shoot-outs, can-can shows and a refreshing drink (you'll need it here in Europe's only desert!) in a double door salon.
An interesting excursion is a visit to the famous troglodyte villages where modern-day cave dwellers have burrowed their extraordinary homes out of the soft rock. You can see the doors, windows and chimneys from the outside but for the most part these "casas cuevas" are buried within the hillsides, protecting their occupants from the blistering summer heat. You'll find cave houses in several villages in Almeria including Alhabia, Gador, Benahadux, Fondon and Laujar de Andarax.
The historic city of Granada, with its fabulous Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens, is only an hour and a half's drive west of Mojacar. Make sure you book tickets for the palace in advance if you go in high season because this is one of Spain's top tourist attractions and visitor numbers are restricted.
Travel south of Granada and explore the magnificent Sierra Nevada mountain range, the home of Europe's most southerly ski resort. On its southern slopes you'll find the spectacular Alpujarras region - truly one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring places in the whole of Spain.
