The accommodation

Casa Ana is a recently renovated country cottage style property, set in its own walled gardens with electrically operated gates, giving privacy and security. Until recently the owners principle residence, it is furnished and equipped to a much higher standard than is usually found in holiday properties and with regular further improvements being made.

It also now has Wi-Fi and a safe.

The kitchen is fully equipped including separate oven and hob, microwave, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. There is air conditioning to the lounge and main bedroom. A new bathroom was installed in 2011 providing modern, immaculate shower and toilet facilities and in 2014 a second shower room. There is a main bedroom with double bed, plus twin beds in the second bedroom, both with fitted wardrobes. Both have been recently re-decorated in a very tasteful style.

Outside there are two terraces which include a built in barbecue and also garden furniture under a tiled roof area for eating "al fresco" or relaxing over a cooling "sundowner" drink.

The property has a walled garden with electrically operated gates and alarm system for a high level of security. There is adequate parking facility within the walled garden for at least two cars.

Setting

The villa is set just 150 or so metres from the sea although in this area it is not a sandy shoreline. It is gently shelving down to the waters edge so that entry to the sea for swimming is quite easy and the bay at nearby Cala D'Embaster is like a natural swimming pool, superb for swimming or snorkelling.

The nearest sandy beach is at Platja Mitgorn near to the Blue Bar, about 900 metres away and all of Formentera's famous white sand beaches are within about 10 minutes by car. Some form of transport, either bicycles, scooter or car are recommended, putting all of the island within easy reach.

Activities and attractions

There are shops, banks and restaurants in nearby San Ferran de ses Roques or a wider choice in the islands capital, San Francisco Javier which is about another 3 km away.

There is regular live music in the square in San Ferran together with craft market stalls most evenings and there are many good restaurants in the same pedestrianised area. Favourites are Can Forn for regional cooking styles and Macondo, a very good Italian restaurant. Reservations are recommended for both although at Macondo it is common to give your name to the head waiter and sit and have a drink outside at the nearby bar until he calls you to a table. Warning, the pizzas are enormous!

Nearby Platja Mitgorn is the largest beach on the island stretching for about 8 km interspersed with rocky outcrops breaking it up into smaller coves. Arguably the best beaches on the island are at Illetes and Levante on the Trocador peninsular, the whole of which is a Conservation Area where no further development is permitted. On the Illetes side of the peninsular, (the west) there are a number of beautiful bays each with at least one high standard beach restaurant.

Many of these are popular with the Baleares jet-set, who roar in with their power boats and yachts so are upmarket and expensive. On the other side of the Peninsular, Playa Levante stretches as a series of coves from Es Pujols to Kiosco Levante and then almost unbroken sand to the tip of the island.

Naturism: On Formentera bathing costumes have generally been considered optional since the 1960's or earlier so that you may encounter naturists on some of the beaches but it is not permitted on the main beach at Es Pujols or in the close proximity of bars or restaurants.
With the island now being dominated by Italian tourists who tend to keep their clothes on, the number of naturists has declined sharply and are now mainly on the official naturist area of Trocador.

Although some beaches may be considered naturist beaches, there is no obligation to go nude; quite simply, swimming costumes are considered optional, so most people just go to the beach they like best, irrespective of whether they wish to wear a costume or not and all seem to happily co-exist without embarassment.

Indeed it all seems so natural and relaxed here that many soon find themselves dispensing with their own costumes and enjoying the extra sense of freedom that sunbathing and swimming then offers, even when they have never done so before.

BOAT HIRE
If you wish to reach coves and beaches only accessible from the sea, it is possible to hire small self drive inflatables in La Savina or for a traditional Llaut with a pilot, visit sabarcadeformentera.com. They will do trips for part or full day and even overnight, for up to 6 people.

It's marvellous!

The villa is spacious, clean, well furnished and complete with modern appliances that give me a warm feeling of home from home. The villa includes a washing machine, large fridge, dishwasher, air conditioning, security gates and alarm, microwave, full hob and oven, TV, DVD player and, best of all, a resident cat! It's difficult to know where to eat as there are five sets of tables and chairs! There's a full range of crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils. Such a marvellous choice and we want for nothing during our stay. Ana, the owner is extremely accommodating and helpful, willing to help out with a query or problem and is always cheerful, friendly and considerate. Having found such a lovely place we return every year, heartily valuing our luck in finding such a gem.
