The building is situated in the area of Bottai, behind the Marina, in Via dei Cordari (Ropemakers), one of the oldest street of the city (750 B.C.) that still conserve the urban fabric of the anchient greek city.

Setting

Syracuse was the most important city of Magna Graecia. It defeated the mighty Athens in 413 and was home to many a great Greek, including the inimitable Archimedes. At the height of its economic, political and military powers, the city had a population of 300,000 and, according to Cicero, was “the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all”.

For those travelling to Sicily today, Syracuse is not to be missed.
The city stands with one foot in the sea and one on land.
On the mainland is the fascinating archelogical site, complete with a large Greek theatre (still used in its original function for an annual Greek theatre festival), and an impressive Roman Amphitheatre.
ORTYGIA
It’s difficult to get lost (it measures just 1km by 500 metres), but packed with over 2,500 years of history. Architectural styles vary widely, encompassing Greek and Roman remains, Mediaeval Norman buildings and a great deal of (relatively) understated Baroque.

The tiny island is home to a winding network of pretty streets, most of wich eventually converge on the lovely Piazza Duomo.
Here, flanked by delightful Baroque palazzi, is the Cathedral, built on and among the Doric columns of a Greek temple.
