la polaina is more than a place to stay - it is an experience & a destination. built on a dream, restored from a century old ruin, & now, finally, powered by the sun, la polaina is a place to disconnect & restore yourself in this magical nature getaway for couples, families or small groups of friends. pets are welcome and will be delighted to run about in the multi-level garden.
this charmingly restored cottage is a little piece of paradise for nature lovers who enjoy simple pleasures, and who want to disconnect from the stress and fast pace of modern life and restore mind and spirit. casa polaina has a near 0% carbon footprint, as it is powered by an independent photovoltaic system for light and basic electric needs, with on demand gas heated hot water. there is a large wood burning stove/oven that keeps the house warm and cozy on chilly nights and during winter months with plenty of fire wood supplied.
modern amenities are kept to a minimum, encouraging you to disconnect from the stress of electronic stimulation and return to the simple pleasures of natural living. no tv or wifi (unless you have data plan to create a hotspot).
la polaina sits up on a hill with majestic views of the ria de noia and muros in the rias baixas region of galicia. tucked away above a tiny medieval village, it is not uncommon to find an occasional group of chickens or sheep roaming the narrow streets.
the two upstairs bedrooms have one queen and one full size bed respectively and there is an additional pull out twin mattress. downstairs is a combined living room, dining, and kitchen area and a small bathroom with a shower. there are two outside dining areas in the 'grotto' of the garden and on the front porch.
it is not for everyone, but for those who yearn to get away from it all, this is a little piece of heaven.
100% back to nature.
what a feeling!
Located on a hill just above a tiny medieval village, La Polaina is completely secluded and private, with breathtaking views of the Ria de Noia.
If you come with a car it is easier to explore the beautiful region, but a car is not at all necessary. There is a regular bus line that runs along the coast on the main road with a local stop just 10 minutes walk from the house. Porto do Son is a beautiful 30 minute walk down a mountain road and cycling in this area is wonderful with every level of topography and outstanding views!
Local airports are Santiago de Compostela (45 mins) and Vigo (1hr 45 mins). Ryanair has the cheapest flights to Santiago from many European cities, and Air Europa, Vueling, and Iberia have cheap flights to Vigo.
From Santiago there is regular bus service that runs to Noia, where you can catch the connecting regional bus toward Ribeira. The local stop is a beautiful 1.4 km walk uphill through our tiny medieval village.
Activities and attractions
The region boasts remote beaches of unparalleled beauty where dolphins can often be seen frolicking beyond the breakers. Some beaches are calm coves with tide pools for children to play in, while others are long wide beaches with some of the best surfing waves and fishing spots on the Atlantic coast. There is a surf school in Porto Do Son and another in nearby Xuño.
A network of newly blazed hiking trails criss crosses the hills, towns and mountains taking you past waterfalls and panoramic views, nature reserves, and ancient celtic ruins. There are also excellent roads for mountain biking and cross country cycling.
La Polaina is perfectly situated for day trips to historic towns and cities with Romanesque churches and architecture.
Galicia is a land of sustenance farming and many villagers (including Rosa) raise their own livestock, grow their own vegetables and keep a pony or a horse.
Last but not least, for the gourmands among you, some of the finest wines and the freshest seafood in all of the iberian Peninsula are from this region. Fresh fish and vegetables are sold daily at the local markets of Porto do Son, Noia and Pobra do Caramiñal, and there is a small live seafood farm just down the hill that sells live crabs, lobster, and more.
