Las Tortugas has recently been completely renovated to offer spacious accommodation for up to 8 adults and 2 children in 4 large bedrooms, 2 sitting rooms, dining room, 2 kitchens and 4 bathrooms. The layout is such that it is very suitable for two families travelling together or for several generations who can all find enough space to do their own thing and of course there is Wifi throughout the house.
The 10 metre pool is set in a large open terrace furnished with sun loungers and a barbecue. Beside this terrace is a large covered area with dining table for 10 and sofas and easy chairs for relaxing in the shade. This area even has a fridge to keep your drinks cool and avoid having to go into the kitchen to top them up!
Las Tortugas was our home for several years while we carried out the renovation and we have left it as well equipped as we would want it to be ourselves - being enthusiastic cooks and entertainers that means that even the most demanding chef will find pretty well everything he or she requires to prepare gourmet meals for ten people.
We also appreciate comfortable nights, so the beds are firm, and the sheets 100% cotton. The towels are large and fluffy and we also provide beach towels and hairdryers to save on luggage weight.
The house is just a five minute drive from junction 529 on the E15 motorway, very close to the Valle del Este golf course. It is in a very private area - only two houses are visible and they are both more than 200 metres away so your privacy is guaranteed.
There are 360 degree views, the main orientation being towards the Sierra Cabrera to the south with Mojácar village on its edge, and the sea at Garrucha can be glimpsed to the east.
Almeria airport is an hour away, Alicante (where there is much more choice of flights) takes two hours. Both airports are close to the motorway and the route is easy to find.
Activities and attractions
Eastern Andalusia is not necessarily the place to come for big night life, more for a chill-out holiday. Mojácar is justly famous for its great chiringuitos (beach bars) serving great fish and paellas during the day. For the competitive there are Go Karts at Garrucha and for the energetic the Aqua Park at Vera.
The beaches of Garrucha, Mojacar and Vera Playa are easy to reach within 10-15 minutes, the nearest being Garrucha.
Rambling and bird watching, particularly in the local hills, are popular winter pursuits and there are bowls clubs and tennis courts, plus 4 golf courses within twenty minutes or so, including the popular if rather challenging Valle del Este on the doorstep (although not visible from the house as there is a hill and a road in the way!).

We rented Las Tortugas in August and upon arrival immediately loved the remote location which over the week made you feel like you were on a ranch with no neighbours nearby so we really felt free and safe.. Both Jane and Terry are wonderful hosts with lots of local information and best of all provided us with some wonderful treats on their visits and once the kids tasted the amazing brownies more were provided since they loved them so much. Thank you for that ;0). The place is remote with lots of wildlife such as birds, rabbits, tortoises and for my insect mad son some lovely large spiders in the surrounding vegetation. Don't worry they are not in the garden... The house is large and has two kitchens and we ate both downstairs and under the stars on the wonderful terrace on the first floor as well as having three BBQ's on the outside grill. Everything you need is included in the house and we were very comfortable during our stay. The pool is wonderful and clean and very large with lots of sun beds and umbrellas So much fun was had both day and night in that pool. All in all a wonderful place to stay but you need a car to visit anywhere but that for us was the magic of the place, remote and undisturbed yet beaches nearby. Also try the go karting which is just down the road. Close to both Vera Playa where i recommend the Chirungito D'Maruja which serves up superb Paella's and seafood and near to the wonderful beaches and coves of Cabo de Gata. I recommend Agua Amarga which is a lovely and stylish white pueblo village right on the coast with a great beach and restaurants as well as the cove of Media la Luna at the far end of Cabo de Gata which has superb snorkelling in crystal clear waters.
Wow. We wanted somewhere quiet, peaceful, scenic and off the beaten track, somewhere private but close enough to Vera, Bedar and Turre. Las Tortugas didn't disappoint. From just about a year ago (Sept 2014) Jane has been the most helpful owner we have ever dealt with with advice and information on the accommodation and its surroundings. Upon arrival we knew it was perfect, just what we wanted. Amazing pool, the best we have had in Spain - I just loved the built-in bench at the deep end of the pool, I could sit there for ages!! The interior of the house was such that it was literally a home from home. The main kitchen is a cooks delight and nothing is amiss - and there is ample storage space, something most holiday rentals are very short of. Everything was clean and tidy and totally relaxing. The outside seating/eating area was a sheer joy throughout the whole of the day - cool in the morning and plenty of shade throughout the whole of the day. We enjoy an afternoon walk and we certainly weren't short of those.....we walked on average 3 miles a day through the endless olive groves in sheer silence and peace knowing that the pool was there for us at the end of our trek. The freshly made bread and cakes on arrival were a lovely surprise and were very tasty, and to have a freshly baked cake delivered when the owner comes to clean and maintain the pool was a real treat. Jane is a great baker!! A special mention to Spooky the dog as he was gorgeous and poor old Ben had a couple of starts when he came in the house and woke him up! Jane and Terry were the most accommodating of owners and as mentioned earlier, a great help for us in finding that special place. For us, why go out at night when you have all of that beauty and scenery around you in the perfect location? Las Tortugas provided us with exactly what we wanted and its the most chilled and relaxed we have been away in Spain. We love the area around Vera and Bedar and Las Tortugas is a gem. If you want an away from it all place to stay then this is it. Perfect.
We (a middle aged couple) stayed at las Tortugas for 6 ½ weeks during februari and march 2015. Starting with some positive points: the house is perfect, the location beautiful. Jane surprised us with a welcome basket with home made products, we were invited to a lunch and when there is a problem e.g. with the internet, it is solved in a day. Still, if we had known that there were so many disturbances (both in- en outside the house) during our stay, we had not booked Las Tortugas. The visits began 2 days after we arrived and stopped 3 days before we left. Two surprise visits had to do with inspection ('lost a gardening tool, so we have to look around ' and – most astonishing - ' we want to change the light balls on the ceiling so we have to count them ': marching into our bath- en bedrooms without asking permission!) Those lights were never changed by the way. Furthermore there were the 'troubles with the pool'.The owners told us as soon as we arrived that there had been cracks in the pool since a long time Because we weren't going to use the pool (they knew that) we didn't think much of it, since they had not done anything about it during the previous (unoccupied) weeks. Well, how wrong can you be. First they had to take photographs to send to the architect, then the architect wanted to come, then the architect and the builder wanted to take a look, the pool had to be emptied, the pool had to be emptied again and finally a person who was 'unable to accompagny Terry ' wanted to come another day, taking 'no more than an hour'. This turning out to be 3 builders plus the two of them busy all afternoon near the pool to measure the pressure of the pipes. We believe that if you rent a home to other people - let alone a home where people spend their holidays - there is no cause for you to be there and carry out activities, unless it is absolutely necessary. Which in this case it obviously was not, so the owners might as well have waited till after we had left. We tried to avoid the disturbances as much as we could but never had the feeling we had the house to ourselves: each visit being shortly followed by the next announcement. Even after we expressed our worries, there were three more to go. And of course, being only tenants, you can't deny the owners access to the house or the pool. All in all, it caused a lot of frustration and irritation on our part. Needless to say, we did not enjoy our holiday as much as we could have, and therefore will not recommend Las Tortugas to others. Definitely not.

We always go to great lengths to ensure our all our guests enjoy their stay with us, and are therefore truly sorry that these guests felt their holiday was spoiled despite our best efforts to minimise any inconvenience, only attending at times agreed with them and never entering the property without consent, which we would never do. It was actually the day before their arrival that the nature and extent of the cracking in the pool had become apparent. Competent builders are busy people, and in order to ensure the pool was ready for our summer guests it was vital to start the process of diagnosis, estimating etc as soon as possible for a major job which will last up to a month. In order to ensure pool and garden are in top condition for our guests the rental contract indicates that we visit the property for regular maintenance. There were just 5 visits during the whole of their stay, always at times agreed with them. Four of them were for less than half an hour, the longest for two hours, and they were only present on one or two occasions. We had planned to change the light bulbs to LED to reduce their electricity bill, but finally decided not to do this as it would have taken a couple of hours to fit them all and they had made it clear our visits were unwelcome. On this occasion we were unable to keep these guests happy and for that we are deeply saddened. We did however offer them a further three days stay for free, but they declined.
