The best neighborhood to stay in Rome: discover Prati

Because your stay in Rome starts on the right foot, it is very important to carefully choose the neighborhood where to stay. Your accommodation should be central, in a pleasant and quiet location but at the same time lively and well connected by public transport.

Our advice on the best neighborhood to stay in Rome? The Prati district, let's find out why.

Prati is the twenty-second district of the Capital and, together with the Borgo district and the Della Vittoria and Trionfale districts, is part of the I Municipio. Looking at the map of Rome you will notice that it is located on the right side of the Tiber river and that it borders the Vatican City to the west, home to very important sites of tourist and religious interest. Today Prati has a worldly and elegant atmosphere, amidst Art Nouveau houses, Umbertine palaces and trendy shops, but its name reminds us that in Roman times this area was dominated by nature. In fact the lands that rose in these places were rich in agricultural fields, vineyards and gardens that were owned by the family of Domitian and then of Nero. The construction and urbanization of these territories began in 1883 and only in 1921 the district was officially named as Prati district, when it was chosen as a reception center for many administrative buildings of the Kingdom of Italy. The nascent area was designed with the intention of recalling a "European city" with large avenues and an international flavor and for being the epicenter of secular Rome, a decision ironically represented by the anticlerical choice to ensure that from no avenue and piazza he glimpsed the dome of St. Peter's.

The Prati neighborhood in pills

The current heart of Prati is the beautiful Piazza Cavour, in which stands the bronze statue of Count Camillo Benso. Here the wide spaces and the elegant buildings give a cosmopolitan and international breath, made even more interesting by fashionable shops and many cafes and restaurants perfect to pamper yourself with delicacies in pure Roman style. The Adriano Theater, the Waldensian Evangelical Church of Rome and the Palazzo di Giustizia (also called the Palazzaccio) overlook the square. It houses the Supreme Court of Cassation. This last building in particular is a splendid example of late Renaissance architecture with baroque accents, which shines with its own light thanks to the generous use of precious travertine in its construction. A few meters away is another architectural marvel of Rome, the Mole Adriana, an imposing building protected by polygonal walls. Another emblem of Prati is the Church of the Sacred Heart of the Suffrage, on the Lungotevere, also called the Little Duomo of Milan because of its neo-Gothic style, so anomalous for the city of Rome. Looking at this building it really seems to be in northern Europe. But the Church hides another surprise, because its sacristy houses a museum dedicated to otherworldly apparitions: the Museum of the Souls of Purgatory, another unusual and special choice. But to better understand the spirit of the city of Prati you just need to walk along Via Cola di Rienzo, the Via dello Struscio in Rome Prati, full of modern shops but also old fashioned and devoted to more worldly relaxation.

Activities and attractions

Staying in Prati you will have all of Rome at your fingertips

Prati is a pleasant neighborhood, perfect for walking on a sunny day and catching a breath of air from the chaos of the city and the more crowded tourist streets, but at the same time it is at the center of everything, in the heart of Rome. Any examples? If you want to reach the Vatican City and see the Vatican Museums or arrive at San Pietro you will need 15 - 20 minutes on foot from Piazza Cavour; Piazza di Spagna is only a 15 minute walk away, the Trevi Fountain at 20, Piazza Navona at 12 minutes. The metro stops Lepanto and Ottaviano, together with those of city buses, will ensure an effective connection with other more distant places of the capital.

In summary: Prati is a neighborhood far from the tourist crowds and very close to the main Roman attractions.
