Activities and attractions
Braga is the oldest city in Portugal and it is usually on the itinerary of anyone traveling to the north of the country. In the heart of Minho, the city is one of the main Portuguese religious centers, has flower-filled streets, a young atmosphere and good restaurant options. A tour of Braga mainly passes through two areas. The historic center is home to the Cathedral, dozens of churches, museums, Roman buildings, colorful gardens and excellent cafes and places to taste regional delicacies, such as duck rice, Minho style cod and traditional convent sweets, such as tibias, the sameirinhos and the Abade Priscos pudding. Far away, on top of a hill, is Braga's main postcard: the Santuário do Bom Jesus do Monte, with its huge white staircase, one of the main Catholic pilgrimage points in Portugal. So you know: you will need to set aside a certain amount of time to be able to fully enjoy the city. You can feel calm and relax. Security in Braga is very high and there is practically no crime or robberies, in addition you can count on help from the locals, who are very attentive and helpful. You will feel good in Braga. What to do in Braga, Portugal Our suggestion is to start the tour in Braga in the historic center, which has most of the tourist attractions and has the advantage of being very small. As the points of interest are very close together, taking no more than a few minutes' walk to get from one to the other, take advantage of the morning to stroll through the city's beautiful streets, tree-lined, flowery, busy and full of cafes and shops. You should probably start the circuit at the Arco da Porta Nova, one of the eight entrances to the wall that provided the limits and protection of the city during the Middle Ages. And it is from this point that we will recommend an itinerary through the center below. But you don't necessarily need to stick to this suggestion. As said, the region is very beautiful, safe and friendly and it's worth getting lost in it! After crossing the Arco da Porta Nova, you will be on Rua Dom Diogo de Souza, which later becomes Rua do Souto. On this route, the movement is intense. Indeed, there are many restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and some of the city's main points of interest, such as the side of Braga Cathedral, Largo do Paço and, at the end, the flowery Avenida da Liberdade and Praça da Republica. Walk leisurely to the end of this extensive pedestrian promenade. On Avenida Liberdade, on the corner of Praça da República, there is an information desk for tourists. Take a walk there, ask if there are any different events happening in the city and pick up a map. After pausing for contemplation (Avenida Liberdade has very colorful flowerbeds and you will hardly pass by without taking a photo), head towards Jardim de Santa Bárbara. You will pass in front of Café A Brasileira, the oldest café in Braga and, if you want, take a break to recharge your batteries – this is a good time. Afterwards, go along Rua do Castelo to see the Torre da Menagem, which was what remained of Braga Castle, demolished in the 20th century. And then, take some time to stroll through Jardim de Santa Bárbara, with various species and colors of flowers, forming a beautiful living mosaic. In the background of this flowery scenery, there is the back of the Paço Episcopal – the front facade of this building you have already seen before, in Largo do Paço, when you walked along Rua do Souto. Break for lunch? The North of Portugal has very typical dishes, such as Francesinha, Arroz de Pato, Bacalhau à Minhota and, in Braga, Frigideira, a savory puff pastry usually filled with meat or cheese. Not far from Jardim de Santa Bárbara, a good option is the Velhos Tempos restaurant, one of the most authentic establishments in the city, specializing in regional cuisine. There is also Ferreira Capa there: half restaurant, half cafe, with daily dishes at fair prices. In the Sé region, the next stop we recommend on this itinerary, there is also Frigideiras do Cantinho, which serves several local dishes. Built in the 11th century, Braga Cathedral is the first Portuguese cathedral, built even before the foundation of Portugal. Due to its importance, the Cathedral rivaled the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the main religious pilgrimage destination in the world. Today, the church mainly retains Baroque features, but it is still possible to see remnants of other eras, such as Roman architecture. Visiting the cloister is free, but to enter the Cathedral you need to pay 2 euros. There are several tickets, which give access to different areas. In the High Choir you can see the beautiful and enormous organ up close. In the chapels, important names for the church are buried, as well as the parents of the first king of Portugal, D. Henrique and D. Teresa. And in the Treasury-Museum there are pieces of historical importance, such as the cross with which the first mass was said in Brazil. After leaving the Cathedral, go to Largo de Santa Cruz, passing by the Casa and Capela dos Coimbras. Once in Largo, take photos with the sign with the city's name, and appreciate the architecture of the Santa Cruz and São Marcos churches. If you have time, stop by – after all, you are in one of the Portuguese cities with the most churches. It is worth visiting, even if briefly, most of them. Along Rua São Lázaro, going to the left of the Church of São Marcos, you will find Palácio do Raio – a beautiful baroque building, covered in blue tiles. Admire the beautiful facade of the palace and, if you are interested, visit the Memórias da Misericórdia de Braga Interpretive Center, which operates inside. In addition to monuments and gastronomy, Braga is also known for its universities and nightlife spots. For more information, contact us.
