The accommodation
You can find me at Stolvizza com. The house was built shortly after the year 1600, carved into the rock to gain more space for the interior. It was part of a longer complex now divided into several sections among the descendants of the original families.
The 1976 earthquake destroyed much of the valley's architectural heritage where houses were rebuilt following the guidelines of modern architecture. Fortunately, Stolvizza, Coritis and Uccea were spared and this house was only intervened by strengthening the structure with anti-seismic criteria and it was only partially modernized.
This house follows the traditional Resian structure, has a relatively simple, rectangular plan and two rooms per floor, a structure composed of large stone walls. All the houses of this type were equipped with an external stone staircase that allowed access to the typical wooden balcony today in concrete. This was also used for the drying of agricultural products.
Setting
Stolvizza di Resia (in the Val Resia, near the Slovenian border) is a true hidden gem for those who love nature, authentic culture, and peaceful atmospheres — the perfect escape from mass tourism.
Stolvizza lies in a glacial valley surrounded by impressive peaks such as Monte Canin (2,587 m) and the Musi mountain range. Beech and pine forests, green meadows, and crystal-clear streams create breathtaking scenery in every season — ideal for hiking, photography, and quiet immersion in nature.
Activities and attractions
The area offers a well-maintained network of marked trails winding through nature and history:
Ta Lipa Pot (“the beautiful path”), a circular trail around the village featuring woods, small waterfalls, and wooden footbridges — suitable for families.
Longer routes such as the Matteo Trail and paths linked to World War I history, perfect for those seeking panoramic views and a deeper connection with the landscape.
The village preserves traditional Resian architecture, with stone and wooden houses typical of the valley.
You can visit the Museo della Gente della Val Resia, which tells the story of local life, homes, legends, and folklore.
There is also a small museum dedicated to the traditional knife-sharpeners (“arrotini”), a craft that once characterized the valley.
