What to see in Nardò

Start your tour of Nardò in the charming historic center and stroll through its beautiful narrow streets, admiring the elegant Baroque palaces, courtyards, and finely carved Lecce stone portals.

Don’t miss a visit to the Chiesa della Beata Vergine Maria del Carmelo, where you can admire the richness of the Baroque decorations, the altars, and the paintings dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Saint Eligius, Our Lady of Sorrows, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria.

Also of great artistic interest are the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio da Padova, with its precious richly decorated wooden coffered ceiling, and the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Purità.

The last church I recommend visiting is the Chiesa di San Giuseppe Patriarca, characterized by a drum-shaped façade reminiscent of the one of the Chiesa di San Matteo. Inside, the main altar—enhanced by a refined bas-relief—the three Baroque stone altars, and the frescoes decorating the columns are particularly noteworthy.

Then make your way to the scenic Piazza Salandra, a true Baroque jewel and symbol of the city. Chosen as a filming location for numerous productions, it is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Apulia. Here you can admire important historical buildings, including the Sedile, the Palazzo della Pretura with its elegant portico, and the Clock Tower on the façade. At the center of the square stands the majestic Guglia dell’Immacolata, a 19-meter-high monument.
