The accommodation

This beautiful spacious house has great views of the sea and beach from the garden, master bedroom and roof terrace. The house has a built area of 260m2 plus a large roof terrace and terraces to the other bedrooms. There is a back porch leading to the private garden with sea and beach views. The house is set in pretty communal gardens; there is a fenced [with lifeguard present in the summer] 25m pool and jacuzzi.

The pretty beach of Cala de Quinta is a short walk. At low tide Cala de Quinta links with "Flamenco" beach, Fontanilla bech and Bateles beach [Conil's beach].

The house has wifi, euro sat TV, air conditioning and heating. There are four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The master bedroom has a beautiful terrace overlooking the beach with sun awning and sun loungers.

Activities and attractions

Conil is about 5 minutes drive and Chiclana [with its wonderful covered food market] is about 20 minutes. Nearby are several championship standard golf courses, horse riding stables, go-karting, an archery centre, tennis and padel tennis courts, a kite surfing centre and marina.

There are a number of good-sized supermarkets close by but the nearest comprehensive shopping area is El Colorado. Here there are a number of ventas [typically spanish "country" restaurants], cafes, a large supermarket with in-house bakery, a vets, a chemists, a tabac for stamps at Venta El Colorado, bank with ATM, newsagents, small household shops and a petrol station.

The ancient city of Cadiz is just 30 minutes drive, Also nearby is Jerez with its sherry bodegas and famous dressage school with its beautiful horses. Seville with its soaring Giralda and magnificent cathedral with nearby Alcazar is an easy daytrip. All around are the hilltop towns such as Arcos, Medina Sidonia, Vejer, Zahara de la Sierra, Grazalema and Tarifa.

Tangiers is just 35 minutes by high speed ferry from Tarifa . . . we always stay at LaTangerina which is a small riad in the Medina by the ramparts in Rue du Sultan run by Juergen and Farida.

Throughout the early summer and early autumn the nearby towns and villages have their ferias: Tarifa and Conil hold theirs in early September, Chiclana's and nearby Colorado's are in early June. Cadiz has its famous carnival in February and Easter and Holy week is very interesting with magnificent floats carried through the streets of towns and villages accompanied by hooded officials and marching bands. Cadiz cathedral square in the evening is a good place to watch the floats being brought through the square and into the cathedral but there are many processions during the day all around the old city.

June is the season for the massive tuna [they weigh in at 250-350kilos] to migrate to the Mediterranean and the time for the Almadraba which is an ancient method of fishing for the tuna. The first week or two in June is when many restaurants focus on their tuna specialities.

Eating out is perfect. With so many restaurants and bars to choose from we still enjoy Francisco's on the beach at Fontanilla, El Timon with views of the beach at Roche, El Rezon on the way to Fontanilla beach, El Ventorillo del Chato on the causeway approaching Cadiz, El Faro in Cadiz, El Jardin del Calipha in the Plaza Espana in Vejer, La Castilleria in Santa Lucia [near Vejer] but there are many more . . . .

For cooking at home and just buying honeys and other local specialities, bread, fresh and dried fruits, spices, cooked meats, cheeses, meat, fish [not on a Monday] and vegetables it really is worthwhile to go to the covered market in Chiclana [Mercado de Abastos] which has air conditioning and underground parking with cafes in the square [Plaza de las Bodegas] which are ideal for breakfast . . . .

For some good vibrant, youthful and really passionate flamenco we always take friends to LaCava in old town Cadiz but there are often excellent flamenco shows at the local theatres of Chiclana, San Fernando [El Cortes] and Cadiz [Gran Teatro Falla] with world famous performers such as la Reina Gaditana who plays flamenco piano - wonderful.
