The accommodation

The flat is in a quiet corner of trastevere, in the heart of the antique historical center.
on the first of a three floor apartment, it has been completely refurbished in 2016.
it is bright with its 5 windows, spacious, 409 sq. ft. and particularly quiet as it overlooks an inside courtyard.
It is fully equipped for long stays for one or two people, either in 2 single beds or in 160x200cm sized bed, with the possibility of using an extra third bed.
the apartment is equipped with heating, a/c and free wi-fi.
Accessed by the little entrance hall there is the bedroom, over 215 sq. ft., which has two windows with a queen sized double bed, or two single beds, a table/desk, an arm chair, a wardrobe and drawers. in the same room there’s a closet with iron and vacuum cleaner.
From the bedroom, through a door you enter another space, measuring 129 sq. ft., with two more windows, in which there’s a kitchen, complete with an induction hob, microwave, fridge, washing machine, toaster, kettle, coffee machine and pots and pans for four people. there’s a living area with a dining table for four, a chaise-longue which turns into a single bed, a library and television. next, there is the bathroom, measuring about 53 sq. ft., with its own window, complete with big shower cabin, hair dryer, soap and shampoo.
If you wish, access is permitted onto the terrace, on top of the building, from where there is a lovely view of the gianicolo, one of themany hills of rome.
The taxi fare from fiumicino and ciampino airports are fixed: € 48 and € 30 repectively.
The guests arriving at fiumicino can catch the train from the airport to the trastevere station, there’s one every 15 minutes, it costs € 8 and takes 25 minutes: from here they can take a taxi costing around € 10/15 for a 10/15 minute ride, or 50 metres from the station they can catch the no. 8 tram which will take them to piazza sonnino from where they can walk along via della lungaretta, piazza s. maria in trastevere and via della lungara for an overall distance of about 1 km.
Those arriving at ciampino airport can take a bus that’ll take them to termini station, it costs €4/7 and takes about 45 minutes. From there the busses 40 express or 64, both costing € 1.50, will take them to the ‘Chiesa Nuova’, on corso Vittorio Emanuele, from which they can make their way to the Mazzini bridge, then down the steps to via della Lungara and via degli Orti d’Alibert, 400 yards from the bus stop.
Those travelling with their own car must be aware that access to trastevere is closed from 6 a.m. – 10 a.m. monday – saturday, and 11 p.m. – 3 a.m. friday and saturday, and in this area parking costs € 1.20/hr. or € 4/8hrs. across the river, over the Mazzini bridge, a new underground parking is available.

Setting

As far as possible, I will personally take care of my guests when they arrive. english is no problem and my husband is fluent in french and portuguese.
Even though your arrival has been communicated by e-mail, in order to avoid any misguidance, I would appreciate a confirmation by ‘phone/text/whatsapp,
On arrival, my guests will receive a set of three keys. The small one opens the door to the building, the second one opens the door on the first floor and the third one the flat’s security door. These keys must be left on the table when leaving. There will be a quick visit of the apartment, just to show how everything works: should there be any problem… i live next door.
To welcome our guests there will be a bottle of wine in the fridge plus a little breakfast. Italian coffee machine, soluble coffee, tea, sugar, marmalade and biscuit rusks. There will also be a small quantity of oil, vinegar, salt and pepper and some washing powder.
However downstairs there’s a small shop with everything you might need, open from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. then 4.30 p.m. to 7.30.p.m. monday – friday and 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. on saturday. Across the Mazzini bridge, there’s a little supermarket open 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. all year round and it’s cheaper.

It is very quiet, far from the maddening crowd, yet right in the middle of all the interesting places to visit even for those who want to stay for a few days.
All the more significant places of the city are within 15/40 minutes on foot from the apartment.
The area is full of restaurants, pubs, street food, pizzas and kebabs. a coffee, sitting down at the table of a bar with free wi-fi, varies between € 2 and € 3.50, whilst a beer or an aperitif vary between € 3 and € 6. The average cost of a good meal in a restaurant is about € 30, you can also have a quick lunch, slice of pizza (a taglio) or kebab, for € 5/6, or a superb meal in an antique and well known restaurant for € 70/100.
The web sites “oggiroma.it” in italian, or “rome.eventful.com” in english, for those who want to know what’s going on in rome.
A five minute walk, 300 meters from St. Peter’s basilica, you will find the busses 40, 64, 23, 115, 280, 870 and 125 with which it is easy to reach almost all the central parts of the city including the underground and the train stations: Termini, S. Pietro, Ostiense and Trastevere from which you can reach Fiumicino and Ciampino airports.
Tickets are available having different conditions and tariffs:
bit € 1.50, valid for 100 minutes from the first hop-on;
roma 24 hrs € 7.00;
rome 48 hrs €12,50;
rome 72 hrs € 18.00;
cis € 24 valid 7 days - unlimited trips in the capital.
All the tickets, which can be bought at the newsagents or tobacconists, can be used in the capital on the tram and trolleybus, the cotral urban bus routes, on the underground and the 2° class regional trenitalia routes roma-lido, roma-giardinetti and roma-viterbo, the last one only on the urban route.
Luggage storage, rental bike and services is across the river, 400 yards from the house (just off corso Vittorio Emanuele), in via della Chiesa Nuova 17, tel. 349.081.60.01, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. it is possible to leave luggage for a few hours, days or weeks: € 1/hr or € 6.50/day – medium large;
€ 2/hr or 9.00/day – oversize; other solutions on the web site “stowyourbag.com”.
They rent bicycles, € 10/3hrs or €15/day, and organize private customized tours and book airport transfers.
Laundry nearby 300 yards from the house: via della pelliccia 35 (near piazza trilussa) 7 a.m. – 10.30 p.m. open nonstop, costs € 2.7/6 kg; dryer costs €1.70/11 minutes; shirt pressing € 1,70.

Activities and attractions

if you would like a trip to the sea or a visit to ostia antica it is possible, cheap € 1.50 and nearby and can be reached by train from the pyramid station.
it is easy to rent bicycles, segways, vespas, golf cars and cars. all information on the internet.

from piazza trilussa - cross sisto bridge - take your right, along the embankment, cross via arenula and you will have the jewish district (commonly known as the “ghetto”) where there are lots of nice restaurants serving typical jewish dishes, and bakeries selling typical delicious jewish cakes and buns.
•ba’ghetto restaurant - via del portico d’ottavia 1 c. around € 30;
•piperno - piazza monte de’ cenci +/- € 100 per person;
•pasticceria boccione - via del portico d’ottavia 1 - speciality ‘pizza
ebraica’ and the cake with ‘ricotta and visciole’ – simply delicious.

coming back from the “ghetto”, across via arenula, you will reach a nice shopping center on via dei giubbonari. along this road, at n. 21/22, there’s roscioli - trendy place for ‘quick lunch’ €25/60; (roscioli bakery - via dei chiavari 34), and at the end, you will reach campo de’ fiori with its open market, flower stalls, restaurants, pubs and famous pizza/bakery shop “forno campo de’ fiori” super ‘pizza al taglio’ - white/red.

from campo de’ fiori take via dei baullari, cross over corso vittorio emanuele, straight on, you’ll find yourself in piazza navona.
200 yards from piazza navona, right behind the senate, you’ll reach the pantheon and the nearby piazza della maddalena with the super ice cream shop “s. crispino”.

art and culture

in a radius of 1 km. from the flat you have, along via della lungara:
•la farnesina - frescoes by raffaello - via lungara 230;
•corsini picture gallery - via della lungara 10;
•botanical gardens - largo cristina di svezia 24;
•john cabot, american university.

going up via garibaldi, towards the janiculum hill (not one of the seven proverbial hills, being west of the tiber and outside the boundaries of the ancient city) you come across:
•the fontana dell’acqua paola, which overlooks rome;
•s. pietro in montorio church, which includes in its courtyard the
tempietto, a small commemorative martyrium, built by bramante;
on top of the hill the statue of garibaldi on his horse and an exceptional view of rome.

from here, at noon every day, on the hour, a canon fires blanks since 1847, on the orders of pope pius ix who wanted to set a standard time for all the bells of the church of rome so that they would chime at the same time.

coming down the hill you’ll meet:
•anfiteatro del tasso, a roman style “cavea” built in the xii century, where
comedies are still played during the summer;
•pediatric hospital "bambino gesù", belonging to the vatican state and
built on vatican territory, internationally famous.

at the bottom of the hill another hospital, first set up in the viii century, s. spirito in sassia.

from there to the vatican:
•st. peter’s;
•sistine chapel;
•bernini’s colonnade;
•castel s.angelo.

then the prati district:
•via cola di rienzo – fantastic shopping area, restauarants – cinemas –
pubs,
•al settimo gelo, via vodice 21 - gluten free ice cream;
•la soffitta renovatio – piazza risorgimento 46/a, near the sistine chapel

•basilica santa maria in trastevere – one of the oldest churches in rome,
floor plan and wall structure date back to the 340s, and much of the
structure to 1140-43 – important mosaics by pietro cavallini;
•sant’agnese in agone – by borromini – rival of bernini who did the
fountain in the middle of piazza navona – saying goes he did one of the
statues with his hand up shielding himself in case the church fell onto
him…
•sant’agostino – famous painting by caravaggio;
•sant’ivo alla sapienza – by borromini – lantern on top has a spiral shape;
•san luigi dei francesi – frescoes by caravaggio;
•santa maria della pace – decorated by raffaello and peruzzi and
architecture by bramante and pietro da cortona;
•santa maria dell’anima – near the previous church – painting giulio
romano;
•sant’ignazio – fantastic tromp l’oeil;
•basilica di s. maria in cosmedin – ‘bocca della verità’ in the portico;
•basilica of s. cecilia in trastevere - statue lying down of st. cecilia – one
of the most famous statues of baroque sculpture – sweeping outline and
stark pose – claimed to be positioned just as it had been found – the
sculptor, stefano maderno, was 23 at the time, there is also a lovely
crypt;
•basilica santa maria sopra minerva – only existing example of original
gothic church – the piazza has the elephant by bernini carrying a 6th-
century-bc egyptian obelisk. the elephant symbolizes strength and
wisdom;
•chiesa del gesù – first truly baroque façade – model for innumerable
jesuit churches all over the world;
•chiesa nuova (rubens) midway between st. peter’s and piazza venezia
close to piazza navona and castel s. angelo – can be reached by buses
40, 46, 62, 64, 190, 571 and 916.
