SURROUNDING
San Damiano
San Damiano is the ideal starting point to better understand St. Francis 'life, is in fact the site of the conversion of Francis, in which the Holy listened to the voice of the Crucified: "Va', and repair my house". He restored the church and we adapted the Protomonastery Santa Chiara. Two years before his death, always here, he composed the Canticle of the Creatures.

Sanctuary of Rivotorto
The Rivotorto Sanctuary that guards inside the Sacred Hovel (sec. XIII): a modest shelter chosen by San Francisco as a place of residence for himself and his first companions. It is defined by many as "the cradle of the Franciscan Fraternity".

To the west of the sanctuary, about 1 km, you find the Church of St. Mary Magdalene (sec. XII) and San Rufino d'Arce (sec. XII). To the east, at about 2 km, the Church of SS. Trinity (Sec. XII) and from the city, the Church of St. Giovannuccio (sec. XVI).
All these places were the witnesses of the most salient episodes related to the conversion of the saint and the founding of the Franciscan Order.
Not far from the house is a riding center for wonderful horse riding and a characteristic farm with a herd of donkeys, perfect outing for families with children.

Assisi Centro Storico

Basilica of St. Francis
1230 retains and holds the mortal remains of the saint, the first preserved in the Basilica of Santa Chiara. Francis himself pointed to the bottom of the hill town, once called Collis hells, as a place where he wanted to be buried. That hill was renamed Collis havens and on it was built the basilica formed by two churches and the crypt where the remains of St. Francis are kept. Amongst them, the decorations with frescoes by Cimabue and Giotto.

Basilica of Santa Chiara
It began in 1257 with the construction of the church and the adjoining convent of the Poor Clares, who since 1212 had been living at San Damiano. Built next to the church of St. George, where he was buried provisionally Francis and where he was buried the Holy 12 August 1253. Here as well the remains of Santa Chiara is also the crucifix of San Damiano which was moved by the Clare in 1257.
